Should coronary artery disease prevention be
undertaken by doctors or by allied professionals? |
“Prevention of coronary artery
disease (CAD) is too important to
be left with medical doctors” is a
provocative, but timely statement.
It has been repeatedly demonstrated
that the standard of preventive
cardiology needs to be improved
throughout Europe. This necessitates
a comprehensive CAD prevention
strategy, particularly with regard
to high-risk patients and secondary
prevention. Who should be in
charge—medical doctors or other
professionals—of which aspects of
these programs is not important: it
is essential that it is done by a team
of well-trained professionals using
a patient-centered approach. Better
organization of primary care settings
and sections on preventive
cardiology within hospitals, and
incentives from health authorities
and health insurance systems will
contribute to a more successful implementation
of evidence-based
guidelines on prevention of CAD
in clinical practice...
